Meet Dr. Amara Osei, whose work in NLP is reshaping how AI handles African languages.
Dr. Amara Osei never planned to end up in AI. Growing up in Ghana, she was drawn to linguistics first — fascinated by the way language shapes thought. Today she leads a team at a top research lab building multilingual NLP tools that finally include Twi, Ewe, and other languages long ignored by mainstream tech.
"Language is power," she says. "When your language is excluded from AI, you are excluded from its benefits."
Her open dataset — the largest annotated corpus of West African languages — has been downloaded over 40,000 times and underpins more than a dozen research projects worldwide.
